Yes the boards that have popular chip sets on them are lucky enough to
have Vista compatibility.
The only compatible board still being made yes. Not sure why any
motherboard maker would make new board based on chipset s that are EOL.
The newer sockets and chip sets coming out for AMD stuff will have no
backwards compatibility. UADs issues with those chip sets are nothing
they can really do anything about. These are design flaws in the chip
sets themselves. We tried ages ago when we first ran across the issue to
find ways to make it work. There are also overall PCI performance issues
on the Via chipset also. The Nforce 3 board works great with a single
but with dual cores it's unpredictable. The Nforce 4 was pretty much
useless over all for most any PCI audio device. NVidia strayed quite
abit away from the PCI-e spec with the Nforce 4 so they could improve
video/gaming performance. Of course this the vast majority of users and
the Nforce 4 is an excellent gamer chip set.
The Nforce 3 chipset over all was better but dual-core support was not
optimized in them. This the case with the Opteron motherboards like the
Tyan 2885. With single cores the board work fine but with dual cores all
kinds of weird stuff happens. The S2895 works better but like the S2885
it still has issues because of the AMD 8131 chipset used on hte PCI-x
bus. The 8131 chipset had a bunch of design flaws and timing and buss
sensitive devices like the UAD and even the TC power core especially the
MK1 would suffer from abnormal cpus loads and drop outs. The 8132
chipset used on the Super Micro boards and the New Nvidia chi sets used
on the F series work fine. The current Intel chip sets work fine but
like AMD they do have to rely on the motherboard manufacturers to
properly lay out a board and not cut corners.

This is the direction I'm headed..probably starting next week. I gotta have
some more horsepower soon. Still, I'm pretty darned happy with the
UAD-1/Magma route. A 13 slot Magma has 4 slots (#''s 1, 5, 7 & 11 on the
newer boards with the round cable and slots # 1, 5, 8 & 12 on the older ones
with the flat 80 pin ribbon cable) that will all share a single IRQ and if
inserted in a mobo PCI slot that doesn't share IRQ with the AGP (or whatever
other show stopper), they will function as a single PCI card on one
driver/IRQ. I'm using two of the newer model 13 slot Magmas with 4 x UAD-1
cards in one and 3 x RME HDSP cards in the other. It's the most rock solid
DAW I've ever built. I have also used a newer and older 13 slot Magma in
this same scenario and they worked great together. Hope the Tyan S2915 will
be the same. It won't be long until I start building this beast. I'm looking
for deals on Socket F Opteron 2220's (2.8GHz per core) right now. They are
quite a bit more than the 2218's (2.6GHz per core). A pair of 2218's can be
had these days for around $575.00, and it looks like prices are starting to
drop.
