Oh yeah, that doesn't happen on a Mac.

Lets see, I own a performa 476, Performa 6400, PowerMac 7200, PowerMac 8100,
two PowerMac 9500s, StarMax 4000, Umax S900 dual, three Radius 81/110s, iBook,
PowerMac G4 AGP, PowerMac G4 dual dual mirror door. No stuck cap lock keys
here! All machines are useable and are still working, 12 years later! Hmmmmm.

RNC guys (FMR Audio) have a new limiter called, strangely enough, the RNL.
I haven't tried one, but I might soon...

eagate 400 GB HD I'm trying to set up on Win98SE with FAT 32.
I'm trying to make 3 133 GB partitions on the drive (to stay below the 137GB
limit for any one partition). System is an old MSI K7 Pro (MS-6195) w/ a
900 MHz Athlon slot A. I'm able to make the three partitions using Seagate's
partitioning program that came with the drive when I have the drive on my
primary master.

However, when the drive is on the secondary IDE cable the third partition
is messed up. In the disk partitioning program it says that the partition
is a FAT 16 partition (it's not), and in Win98SE I can't see the third partition
at all. I checked the drive on another Win98SE system (also old, Iwill XP333
with a Athlon 1800+) and couldn't see the third partition there either.

Any ideas what's up? I should be able to see all three partitions in Win98SE,
correct? Is it the fact that the boards are so old? Could it be a problem
with the drive?

Thanks for any help.

Rich KelleyI'm looking for an external ribbon cable to an older 32bit Magma chassis.
The cable is an 80 pin microcentronics (MC80) and the part name is CBL2PCI.
It's a 3M branded connector.

Calls to Magma have been about as useless as tits on a boar hog. I spent the
best part of yesterday trying to source one on the net with no luck. Any
suggestions as to where to find one or how to build one would be welcome.

Thanks,

DeejDo you have the little yellow speaker icon lit on the selected tracks?

David.

update? If that doesn't cut it perhaps an IDE/ PCI controller would. BTW, I
hate those hard drive software utilities, when they get confused data goes
bye bye. Avoid it if you can.

ed and unless you are looping "all" your Paris tracks through Cubase,
you will need to have your latency set to 1.5ms in order for Cubase PDC to
work properly. Any higher buffers and it sorta falls apart using this
method. that's why on projects wwith high track counts where I'll be using
lots of plugins this way, I usually use Sx as the host to stream tracks from
SX to Paris .............but anyway..........

........so .......here's how.......

1. Route your digital I/O in the Paris patchbay to work on a certain Paris
aux bus. Set this Paris aux to "external'

2. Connect the Paris digital output to the native soundcard digital input.

3. Connect the native soundcard digital output to the Paris digital input.

4. In Cubase, go to the VST connections window and create a stereo input and
output bus using the native soundcard digital I/O that is sending/returning
from the Paris digital I/O

5. Next, go to the Group/X tab and "Add FX".

6. Choose the effect you want sent/returned to/from the Paris aux

7. In your Cubase project window, create a stereo audio track and name it
Paris Aux. Choose the stereo inputs and outputs that you created in step 4
above and raise the channel fader to unity.

8. In the project window, go to the effect channel that is showing the
effect you created and set it's output to the stereo output bus that you
created in step 4 above (the same stereo output that you Paris Aux channel
(step 7 above) is using.

9. In the effect channel, insert the effect you have chosen for this channel
and raise the channel fader to unity.

10. On the audio channel you want to effect, instantiate the effect that you
want to use (the same effect that you created in #6 above and inserted in #9
above) as a "send" effect and drag the wet/dry to 100% wet.

11. Set the Paris aux to stereo and start playback.

Now you can pan this effect L/R and control the send and return levels with
the Paris aux. I know this looks like a hassle, but once it's set up as a
template, it's easy to use. I've got the 8 ADAT I/O and the spdif I/O of my
Multiface set up as 5 aux busses interfacing with an ADAT card in my MEC #4.
I just use this submix as an aux send/return to Cubase. Works like a charm.
I've got l

enough
to give me confidence that I should continue.

There is also a lot of controversy, as mentioned by our AA here, about whether
it's a good thing all round to even have perfect pitch at all. My feeling
on this is that, as a person who (hopefully) develops the skill at a later
stage in life, long after developing my relative pitch skills, long after
learning to play, and long after establishing my taste in music, that I'm
hoping that I can take all the old stuff I have learned with me also. I'm
hoping that, for example, I will be able to transpose a tune my old way.
I'm thinking that those born with perfect pitch come to rely on it, whereas
I am unlikely to, as I have learned to do without it already. Hence I am
picturing that I should be able to use it when appropriate, but basically
turn it off when I don't need it, or at least ignore it when something is
off key and just listen "how I used to"... though time will tell if I'm
right. In any case, I've heard a lot of different stories about such things,
and how differently some possesors of perfect pitch respond to out of key
parts, transposition, and similar such things. Some have trouble with some
things and not others. Some seem to have the best of all worlds and simply
use it when they want, and experience little in the way of negatives. I'm
hoping, seeing as how I know how to live without it already, that I can be
one of those who doesn't experience too many negatives from it...

....assuming I aquire the skill at all.

I really am starting to feel that want to aquire it just so that I can explain
to all the people I've seen post that "It can't be learned" that, in fact,
it can. I'd like to sort that one out at least.

The point is though, that notes and keys do sound different to me. Some are
more happy, and bright, where others are mellow and soft, and others still
are, well, kinda rounded. I'm hearing this, and I'm becoming increasingly
confident that my training is increasing my perception of this.

I'm going to have to do this, because I'll look like a goose if I don't.
;o)

Cheers,
Kim.Hi Rich,

Windows 98 doesn't support 48 bit addressing for hard drives, which means
you can only use drives no larger than 120 GB. Larger drives will appear
to work, but what happens is the data wraps around, so the 121st GB is actually
the first GB, and your HD gets scrambled as soon as you write to it.

There are two ways to deal with this. Rudolph Lowe wrote a custom driver
that has never worked properly for me. It may be possible to make it work
properly, but I've had problems with it.

The other way is to buy a PCI IDE controller card that comes with a 48bit
lba driver for windows 98. I've never tried this, but I think I'm about
to.

Sorry about the bad news,

Mike
