Hey, thanks AA –

The VirtuaVia’s PSU is causing deal-breaking problems, and those need to be
eliminated first before anything else can be determined. Here’s a very
interesting thread from the UAD forums, looks like someone else was thinking
the same thing as me –

How to get the VirtuaVia box working with multiple UAD cards

How to get the VirtuaVia box working with multiple UAD cards
by mkstat on Mon May 12, 2008 12:03 pm

A few months ago I bought a Virtua Via PCIe to PCI expansion chassis for my
new MacPro 8x3GHz to run my PCI UAD cards.
The reason why the VV box doesn´t work properly with more than one UAD cards
is because of a weak powersupply. The included external PSU delivers 12V/3A
and unfortunately the maximum rating of the internal (on the card) 5V
step-down switching regulator (2596) is also limited to 3A. So using a
higher power rating 12V PSU is pointless. The UAD manual says: „Each UAD
card uses a maximum of 14 watts of 5 volt power from the PCI bus“ – in other
words each card draws 2.8A at 5V from the PSU. So there is no chance for
safe operation of more than one card plugged in the chassis. I actually had
problems with just one card at h

2V PSU is pointless. The UAD manual says: „Each UAD =
card uses a maximum of 14 watts of 5 volt power from the PCI bus“ &#82=
11; in other words each card draws 2.8A at 5V from the PSU. So there is no c=
hance for safe operation of more than one card plugged in the chassis. I act=
ually had problems with just one card at higher cpu loads (80%+) in form of =
dropouts.

BUT:
After disabling the on-card 5V step-down switching regulator and connecting=
a 400W ATX computer powersupply directly to the PCB in the VV box a setup w=
ith 3 UAD cards (each with 95% CPU load) worked flawlessly!

The modification is quite easy and safe to do for people with some experien=
ce in electronics and PCB soldering skills.

For those who are interested I will post a step by step guide with some pic=
s for this modification during next week.
