Genuine, warm vintage tape echo. Loved it.
Now, had my brain kicked completely in before about 3/4 of the way
through the show, I would have patched the output of the damn thing
into a couple spare tracks in Paris so I had the actual verb to mix
in....
Yes, I was slapping myself in the head. a lot.
Oh, well.
Next week: Jim Peterik. Will be a full house, rockin' into the
night...
pabYour right about The RNC! Well, some of these boxes just do the balancing
trick, and some do the conversion up or down.

can have multiple locations on the server, just enter them all in the
install window. I will try this on mine when I hook my temporaray server
back up tomorrow. In any case, you could make a new vst folder just for
FXT, leaving the others where they are for your other songs. I was having
the same problem as you until I got the shared location right in the config
applet.

>One other item, is, if your server vst folder is in the program files folder
path, make sure you have access to it thru this path over the network. I
noticed when I set my network up that Program Files was not automatically
shared just because my C drive was shared. So I had to drag it into the
shared files folder and make my shared connection through this path. Of
course, you can try putting the vst folder in the shared files folder
instead. Anyway, make sure you can access the vst folder on the server from
the host thru the network - so it can be found on the host scan. Gotta go,
hub yelling at me.

>Paris ASIO never developed past 'maybe' in my book to usable status. There
was some beta testing years ago I did where we had multiple I/O, but it was
just not ever stable enough for prime time.
While paris came with good convertors, the internal clock is not up to the
same standards as what you can now buy. If you're looking to jump to native,
I'd say keep the paris for it's mix bus capability and use a native app with
a new I/O to push signal to Paris for final summing. Native still isn't
*there* for the paris sound.
I hope you don't mind that I will repost this to the main group - it's
definitely related to Paris and most ppl hang there anyway so you should get
more responses that way.

I choose Polesoft Lockspam to fight spam, and you?
http://www.polesoft.com/refer.htmlI bought Paris eight years ago to afford processing power. At that time I
just couldn't afford fine analog gear. Now I can. I can attest that when one
patches processors through the inserts and "throws the coals" to Paris
submasters and two-bus, audio expands greatly.
If a track needs processing in part or beyond Paris capabilities, I fly it
through a lan to Adobe Audition 1.0 which opens paf files, work it and fly
it back to Paris for mixing.
Still use an Athlon 750 with a Tankersly suggested Miro Star 6167mb. 128 meg
o ram. Never crashes, even working 6 hour tracking sessions.
Clients love our studio's signature sound.....sounds like 2 inch. And that
is the goal..
The only future upgrade would probably be SX or Pro Tools run through a
Neotek, but research suggests mixing ITB with other than Paris math is not
an option.

Any ideas?
JohnYou load a million DX and VSTs and open up wavelab in XP. 130MB total, You
do the same in Paris 3 and it goes to 600MB. Remove the VSTs and it's down
to 330mb. Paris apparently loads every VST into memory where other apps
don't.
I also found that if you wrap the vsts to DX's they don't render. Not to
mention that if you run Lexicon Pantheon stereo verb in mono it crashes paris.
Any ideas of a wrapper that will actually render. DXs work great in Paris
but VSTs are memory hogs. I'll up to 1.2gb ram but I'd rather another way.
Thanks,
JOhnFXpansion wrapper here...no problems with rendering.

Ivory seems to run better on Receptor than on Mac or PC. The achilles heal
of Receptor has been streaming large piano libraries from disc at playable
latency using Native Instruments Kontakt. Ivory just plain rocks on the thing.
Other non sample based softsynths have always run like a champ on it.
My main application for it is live performance. I run the Scarbee Rhodes/Wurly,
Native Instruments B4, MTron, and assorted other stuff on it. I have yet
to fire up "Uniwire" (A VST plugin that calls to Receptor over ethernet)
and integrate it as an effects processor into my studio, so I can't comment
too much about that side of things. One of these days I'll switch to XP for
Paris and get that going.

>Steve,
I'll post up some MP3's of the session later today or tomorrow. These are
just piano/vocal cover tunes for a client who is cutting a demo for lounge
singing gigs.
The secret to Ivory is getting a good controller, dialing in the proper
velocity curve in the application (very easy to do) and having a computer
that can handle streaming all of the voices (over 160) and will allow the
notes to decay normally. I'm using a dualcore AMD 4200 with 4G RA and it
handles this task with ease. There are *lots* of presets in the application
which are based on different EQ, ambience, chorusing, etc. I turn all that
off and just use the dry piano samples. It's scary realistic.

Paris has been great for me but it's time I moved on.
It's been years since I was active on this forum but I still want to thank
everyone, audio wise I owe I lot to this forum and Paris and I wanted to
say thanks.
so THANKS TO ALL.
I will list my Paris stuff for sale.
JackAnyone have any experience with Japan's voltage and their electronics? I
understand that the Japan voltage is 100 volts, unlike our 110/120 volts.
In most of my equipment, it seems to have automatic switching (100-240).
Anyone with expience of using your Paris and other audio hardware over there?
I am looking to go there within the next few months and I am trying to figure
out if I need some kind of converter. And if there are any issues. I have
some rather expensive equipment I'd rather not get ruined because of that.
When I inquire with the locals over there... they usually reply that they
use a converter, but no other details are known... plus, they are prolly
referring to stereo's and not pro equipment. Anyone? If I can ask what analog gear are you patching in and how/where/why etc?
What plugs are you still using and in what situations? I always thought
it was a pain to patch the external gear in unless you have something that
made a big enough difference... but maybe I'm doing things wrong. thanks
for the knowledge.

>Hi Neil,
That was probably my post you were referring to re: the Line6 Toneport UX2.
Well, I'm happy to say that I spent quite a bit of time on Saturday with
it and am extremely happy with the product. I'll also admit that I was a
VERY early adopter of POD and my live rig is a PODxt through an Atomic Reactor
18-watt tube amplifier.
The TP UX2 is a great deal for the money. At $199 you're really getting a
lot for your money. Only downside is that it requires a fairly fast host
computer (PC or Mac) as, unlike the POD family, the Toneport relies on the
computer's CPU for all of it's processing. From what I can tell, the TP is
simply a box with some I/O ports, A/D & D/A, a couple of meters and knobs.
I ran my guitars straight into the UX2 and out of the S/PDIF connection into
a MEC and the sound coming out of my Mackie 824s and Sony 7506s was awesome.
There are also a number (4) of tone packs that you can purchase from Line6
that add amp, speaker, and effects emulations. I'll probably buy them this
week as a friend who's running a PODxt Live has them and says thay're awesome.
(Even though he's a dyed-in-the-wool PT guy I still trust him!).
I haven't tried the mic preamp or LA2A emulations yet. Hopefully, I'll find
some time this week to check those out.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
Hope this helps!

Thanks,
RichJust when you're all thinking "Come on, this is getting silly..."
It does seem to be the first suspect, the UPS.
This morning I awoke and it was down, and I did my usual, unplugged it and
plugged it back in... whirrrrrrrr... silence. Tried again, unplugging
it a little longer... whirrrrrr... silence. Hmm. One more try... same.
Unplugged it from the UPS and plugged into the actual mains, and boing, up
she came.
So we're running on straight mains at the moment. Time to start looking at
UPS pricing. I'll still get that spare processor anyhow as it's dirt cheap
and the fan is definately not happy, but I don't think that's what's causing
the outages currently.
Hopefully, now that the UPS is out of the circuit, we may see some more reliable
service for a bit. ;o)

Hey Jack
out of curiousity what are you moving to?
DonMy feeling is that both plugins and hardware have their place.
If noise is more important than sound quality, plugins are the way to go.
For music, outboard rules.
Just my 2 cents.

something to provide you guys with some entertainment through
someone else's misery (can't let Deej have exclusive rights to
THAT territory, now can I? LOL)!
So, a couple of weeks ago, I'm vacuuming the pool (which I've
only done a few times all winter), getting it ready to start
using again, because we live in the desert & soon it'll be
swimming weather and I notice that the filter pump is leaking a
bit - I decide to pull it apart & see if it's a gasket or
something I can fix - turns out to appear to be coming from the
impeller seal, oh well, I don't have the tools for that, so I
put it back together & call a pool service company - they come
out a couple days later & say tha's indeed what it is, and they
can order a couple parts & fix it the next weekend...
cool. "Oh, and by the way, I notice that this 3-way valve that
sends the water up to the solar heating panels is cracking on
the outside... can you guys replace that at the same
time?" "Sure, but you'll also need to replace these two check
valves when you do that" "Ummmm... ok, can you get me a quote?"
Guy calls back later with a quote... a few hundred for the whole
thing... a bit more than I was prepared for, but not really out
of line, so I say "Do it!" Nice folks - don't make me pay when
they fix it, they send me a bill & when I receive it I send
them out a check this past Monday morning.
Monday night - last night - my daughter goes into the spare
bedroom, which is her "office" (which she doesn't use much -
she does all her school assignments on her laptop in her room
or the living room & then prints them out as needed... some of
them she uploads online in fact, and her professors access them
& grade them there, and she gets her grades via e-mails -
pretty slick, huh? Anyway, that's neither here nor there.), and
she calls out: "Dad, there's water on the floor in this room!"
Fuck... roof leak? It hasn't been raining, what the hell could
it be, then I realize that the water heater closet is on the
wall opposite that room... open it up, sure enough, leaking
from the bottom of the water heater. It's gas (not electric),
so I don't want to fuck with it... call the plumber, pay
the "emergency call premium", and have him shut off the water &
the gas... I drain it with a hose out the front door & call my
insurance company to see if I'm covered. Turns out I'm covered
for the damage the water caused, but not the plumbing itself,
which I guess makes sense. Now here's the kicker... plumber
tells me that new codes require a certain type of pressure
valve to be installed any time they do maintenance, or
repair/replace a water heater. I tell him "Wait, I just had
that done last year, when you guys replaced this old gas inlet
valve that quit working... it's this pressure relief valve
right here, and it cost me an extra 200 bucks or so at the
time." "Yes, sir that was a new CITY code implemented a couple
years ago, this is a new STATE code that they just implemented
this year... and it supercedes all city & municipal codes!"
"Fuck"
"Indeed"
(OK, he didn't say "Indeed", but it would've been appropriate
if he did) :)
Anyway, so here's the worst part... in order to do this new
kind of relief valve, they have to do one of two things - run a
line from the hot water (output) side of my water heater, up
through the roof, and down the front of the house to 6" above
grade, OR, run a line from the hot water side of the sink
nearest to the heater, then out through the nearest outside
wall, and down to 6" above grade, then the relief valve goes on
the end of that pipe in either case.
Sounds like a shitload of labor in either case, right?
Right... we all know you can get a water heater for a couple
hundred bucks, right? Total quote for this job... $1,444.00.
So, insurance will pay for the part of the carpet that's
damaged due to water, but not the whole room; and some in the
hallway is damaged too, but only a couple square feet of it...
so I get to pay for all the rest (like I'm going to replace
half a room's worth & 1/10 of a hallways worth of carpet,
right? Like you could actually get away with that.), and if
course, I have to pay for all of the plumbing work, since
that's not covered. There's mold in the carpet now, and it's
being dried out by one of those companies that does that sort of
thing, but my daughter & I are going to be staying in a hotel
for a couple of days due to health concerns with the mold, and
also because of no hot water at the house at this time.
Insurance wil pay for a couple of days of that, but it's going
to take longer than that (4 days it's looking like) to get all
this shit done).
This is simple, and it's costing me a bundle... I can only
imagine what the people whose houses were screwed up,
but not completely flooded out, by Katrina are going through.
And now that the pool filter's up & running, and I'm using the
valve for the solar panels again, I notice that there are now
two leaks coming from the solar panels themselves & water is
streaming down the back of the roof when that valve is engaged.
AUUUGGGH!!!!
I don't even want to tell you about the picture window that blew
out during a windstorm about six weeks ago.
Neil, lamenting his circumstancesJesus Neil, quit complaining. I can't find a Win XP driver for my Opcode
SonicPort and eBay just changed my password. Damn, I can't bid on a pair of
pants. Let's put things in perspective, ok. Seriously, sorry to hear about
the major difficulties. Oh bad luck comes in threes. Did three bad things
happen yet?:-)

Steve CoxIt's an older box running a Pentium III.
It's cool. I've still got a spare CPU coming for only $15, so that's no problem.
I actually only need a new fan, but I doubt I'll come across a PIII fan for
less than that so I might as well grab both.
Cheers,
Kim.

>Speaking of rain, or in this case water, I can tell you a little about going
off to another city for a Christmas party, and getting home the next day to
a house with a broken water pipe upstairs with water still running and the
entire lower floor flooded, needing new hardwood floors, wallboard,
ceilings, fixtures, etc, and the bad thing was that we pulled out the carpet
and hung it over the fences to let it dry out and somebody stole it! And
the really bad thing was that the house was covered for flood damage, unless
of course it was the result of a broken water pipe!!! I won't even mention
the repair costs. This adds up to more than 3 IMO. Now, you should all
feel much better. : -)

....I have a wobbly toilet... ;oS
Cheers,
Kim.Well, if it makes you feel better I did get a morbid giggle out of your dillema,
and now, of course, I feel guilty for laughing at another's misfortune, and
don't know what to do about my guilt.
With any luck my wobbly toilet, which I'm hoping will make it to the rental
inspection in two weeks, will collapse and spill poo on my foot, and then
I will know karma has come to get me and I can stop feeling guilty.
Meanwhile, best of luck to you and your daughter... and try and think of
your motel stay like a holiday. ;o)
Cheers,
Kim.

You'd be describing the former ass size of our house mate (and one of the
reasons it became wobbly prematurely...(he has since dropped over 80 lbs)
I on the other hand have what my better half describes as a "cute little
butt"
Yes I know more information than you need but hey, you brought it up!
heeehehehehehehe
DonWell seeing as how we're on the subject...
....and feeling somewhat uncertain we should be here, but continuing against
my better judgement... ;o)
....my ass isn't yet the wobbling type I don't think. It's still fairly muscle
bound. Indeed a mate's girlfriend recently described my ass as "a black person's
butt". Not that I'm particularily aware of what the asses of different races
are like, but generally I consider those of darker skin to be more toned
than us generally flabby white folk, and mine pokes out a bit, but in a defined
way... ...I think I'll shut up now. ;o)
Now my stomach on the other hand needs some work... ;o)
....but I'm thinking it's the beer, and I'm not likely to give that up. ;o)
....but I can assure you the problem is the toilet. ;o)
Cheers,
Kim.

>Hey Neil, I've tried to stay with the all (or most) fx in one box route
to keep noise down. The only stomp boxes I use are a cry baby, dual RAT,
and a line6 delay (the green one, getting ready to replace it with a Yamaha
UD Stomp I recently purchased though (thanks Don for the tip :)). I tried
quite a few rack units and a couple of years ago decided to go with a Lexicon
G2 even though it is out of production. There are quite a few really nice
sounding effects and the unit does not degrade the sound like some of the
cheaper floorboard units do or like having a million stomp boxes does. And,
this is the only unit I have ever used that sounds exactly the same by-passed
as it does with no effects enabled. I've seen easier user interfaces but
I've been really happy with it overall. I play live a lot and the one thing
that this unit does that sold me on it, that no other stomp box or rack unit
I could find would do, is the ability to tap in (via the pedal board) the
tempo for the tremolo effect. They are still pretty pricy, but so far, I
haven't found anything that tops it for versatility, programmability, and
quality for playing live. Hey, Steve Morse uses one too! :) I'll be curious
as to what you wind up getting though.
Got any good suggestions for amps? I currently use a single Fender Hotrod
(40w) but I'm looking to go to an A/B set up. Not really happy with the clean
channel on that Fender but I do like it's distorted channel. Someone here
a while back suggested Carr Amps http://www.carramps.com/. They're really
expensive but I liked the sounds I was hearing from the demo clips on their
web site. Good luck with your search.

Amazing. Easily do 32 tracks (only 2 eds installed) and haven't run out of
plug in power, eg old Wave, TC and Antares. Don't use these much anymore.
Maybe a desser.
We use Cranesong, Manley, Lexicon, and a couple tastey old Orban
paragraphics Sometimes we insert on channels, sometimes strap across the 2
bus. Knowing Paris latency times, and having significant IO, reamping is a
snap.
We mix down to Audition on a seperate box w/ a Lynx L22 via analog.
Would someday like to upgrade for cool new plugs and features but everything
here works so well, (haven't crashed in months and that was graphic related)
and sounds soooo good I do not know what would improve the digital side.
Clients return, and folks say we sound like 2 inch.. Big, fat warm, and
deep.
This is a testimony to Paris, a system that never should have gone away. Now
only the blighted $20k + pt hd is left as a DSP based recorder. Bah!
Blighters.
We are a busy pro studio that works everyday, and pays our bills.

I am moving to Cubase sxWill do. I've been having some problems getting FXT to work, but I believe I
have determined what the problem is so hopefully I will have time tomorrow
to get this resolved.

>Hey there,
I got a Rocktron Prophesy for xmas and I gotta tell ya, this thing
Totally Kicks Butt. I've had a lot of amps and processors go through
here, but this one is a keeper.
It's not all soft and mushy like the Pod or other such devices and it
has the beauty of a tube amp w/o the nastiness of tubes vis-a-vis manuf
inconsistancies, thermal fatigue etc. I've got it going through an
Alesis RA300 power amp (I still can't shake myself of that amp, it's
pretty guitary...wouldn't use it for anything important ; ) into a
Marshall Cab that's loaded with a pair of G-12's and a pair of Vintage
30's. The Rocktron is a tad pricey but highly recomended.
It also has some nice effects and a simple harmonizer (non-scalar)
which, while not the best idea, is still usefull for a couple of things.
It also has eq per channel / pre dist / post dist/ and global, which
give a ton of control over how that dist sounds, and it's a fabulous
dist. The clean is also beautiful to the max but clean seems to be
easier to accomplish in most gear.

>Hey guys,
Well, it's been two freakin' years since I started getting sick and it
wasn't until Nov that they figured it out 'cuz I didn't have the one
main symptom that they look for...sheesh..dr's...
LSS...I'm back to health and feelin' great....downside - I've had to put
many things, including my music/studio endevours, on hold. Now that I'm
back to normal I can begin again where I left off.
So where I left off was getting Nuendo (in comp 2) to slave to Paris (
comp 1) via paris adat card and digi9652 card.
I have the settings and p-bay in Paris set correctly, I'm pretty sure,
'cuz when I hit paris/play, the digi9652 control panel indicates that
the sync is working and the time begins to roll in comp 2.
But Nuendo doesn't start. I've set it up the way I think it should go,
having done syncing (LTC) in Cubase for years, but I'm doing something
horrible wrong I suspect. Word clock is also connected. So I'm not sure
what's happening to make Nuendo not respond to the incoming 9-pin signal.
Does the paris/digi setup allow me to use APP or regular adat sync (that
I'm in the dark about and assume it uses the optical conections, yes?
Dunno. Am I even using the correct way of going about syncing? What do I
need/need-to-know to make these two comps dance?
I'd sure appreciate some help getting back up and running. : )

>Hi Jef,
Nice to see you back on the group, and in good health!
AFAIK, the Digi series had issues with syncing using the 9 pin port.
I seem to recall BT having issues with these cards and had to switch
to the HDSP version. I was not succesful at getting this to work here
with a Nuendo 9652 card (Digi 9652 re-badged for Steinberg) and made
the switch to the HDSP version also (anyone want a cheap Nuendo 9652
card? ;-). I think it had to do with either NU/Cubase software
versions, or operating system... can't remember exactly what it was.
Perhaps DJ has more to add here...

David.

majors? We have license agreements with the four major labels: Warner, Universal,

You'll stand to make about 60 cents per track or about $6 per album. Compare

Here's the beauty - your fans come to your site to purchase your music -

flawlessly with no gnashing of garments, rending of teeth.

Well, I much prefer OSX to Windows XP, and I've been using both for years and Windows since 3.11. Given the Mac Mini's size and form factor (part of what you pay for), I would hardly say that it's overpriced. If your looking to save space and be able to cart the thing around easily, it's certainly an attractive option. And the Mac Mini's are nice for running node computers in logic 7.
Cheers,

Been working with a 3 card paris rig running on ME for years. But it fell
apart last week so I'm going to make the XP move. I would really be
greatfull for input on stable hardware setups that some of you may be
running.
The only hardware that I want to use from my old set up besides the three
Paris cards is a Matrox G-450 duel head video card.

> I am moving to Cubase sxI was just posting the info about it. I'm not looking for the big Mac vs.
Windows debate. However, I will give my prospective on the over price Mac.
There is a lot of ways of looking at things. People for years have said
ignorant things like there's no software for the Mac. Well the Mac has been
able to run Windows for about 15 years. The fact is and has been that the
Mac has been able to run all the Mac software, and the great majority of
windows software. That's more than a PC can do. I think that is value.
Now it will run Windows natively, I think that is value. I can run all
my software on my Mac, cruse the internet, run Paris or other audio software,
all on the same machine with out being concerned with viruses. I think that
is value and piece of mind. I don't have to buy two machines, I've seen
on this NG where people have said that they have two machines and they never
go on the net with their audio work station. I think that is ridiculous.
What do two machines cost? What do two machines cost to maintain?
I agree with you that Apple computers are over priced! That is vary disappointing
for any Mac user. However, I still think that there is value, and some advantages
with a Mac. I think you have to look at the overall picture, the cost of
the box is not the only thing to factor in.
I've always said, if your a PC guru and you have years in to learning the
ins and outs of a PC, there is no sense in learning a Mac. This, I think
is about to change. What if Apple computers cost about the same? Not that
this is going to happen any time soon, but, would you consider buying one
then? What if Mac OSX could run any and all of your windows based software
natively without speed issues. Would you consider the purchase of an Apple
computer? This could vary well be Apple's first step in kicking that door
open and doing just that. (Pure speculation on my part; ) )
I think it is a step forward, It gives people choices. The bad news is,
Apple does point out that if you use Windows XP on a Mac, that your machine
will be subject to attacks and all the windows viruses.
I use and like both Windows XP and Mac OS.

Nice, Deej - that Pie-an-uh sure does sound shweet!
And the voice ain't bad either! :)
NeilFor youse guys that ARE using SX, but summing through Paris,
are you still noticing much of a difference if you're using SX
v3? I upgraded to that from v1.xx recently and I do notice a
big difference in the summing - the earlier version I had was
indeed thinner-sounding than v3, I thought.
