By the way Paul, you may want to change the wording on Chucks picture with
Jason Miles, since those who never saw Chuck, might get it wrong. Chuck
is on the right, and Jason Miles on the left.

for sure how apples to apples the comparison is. I've been using the Claytor
mostly as a room mic for the drum kit but also on some other things where
I'm doing scratch tracks of guitars or something. It's not hyped at all,
not bright and not dark, but it has a little gravitas to it that kind of
sneaks up on you. It's not easily noticed until you try a different mic on
the same source.
It's pretty ecumenical about preamps as well, I've used it with everything
we have, from the built in pres on the Firebox to my Langevin.
It will be interesting to see if we use it for vocals. So far we've been
using the Baby Bottle for demos but I think when it comes time to actually
track I'll try the Claytor and the Bottle on each of us and see what works
best. We have three male vocalists and if I had to handicap it I'd say I'll
go through the bottle (I have the lowest speaking voice and usually sing
a part under the lead vocal), Russell will use the Bottle (very loud, full
voice), and Nick will use the Claytor (much thinner, higher voice than the
rest of us). But it will be interesting to see.

Feel free to look me up if you're ever in Denver, you can try mine.
If not, try to get a demo of workbench (variax software) and see what
it's like to modify and customize the models to taste. Pretty cool. For
example, my modified strat model is an improvement on the stock one IMO.

414's I'v used (don't have a TEF for them thought) and smoother as well.
They don't impart the honky mids of a U87 in cardioid and you can also work
the proximity effect without getting overly boomy unless you swallow it.
They open up nicely in omni and just sorta get out of the way and let the
sound through without adding a bunch of color. Great utility mics.

Never ever. Really awful things happen. All the time.
Remember, anger makes you slow, blind, and stupid. Keep your cool
and you will be fine.
And yes, I am speaking to myself too.
A friend got into it with a creep, a punk who dared him to do anything.
He did something. He went to the trunk and pulled out a Samurai sword
and put the point on the guy's chest. The guy dared him to use it...
No one got hurt, but my friend went to jail and lost all weapons...
Ironically, the more you are able to defend yourself, the cooler you need
to be.
Read this:
http://ayoob.com/cgi-bin/miva?Merchant2/merchant.mv+Screen=P ROD&Store_Code=Ayoob&Product_Code=GE&Category_Co de=AMAB
DCThat sounds like a great setup, Bill.
I have a friend who uses a Tonelab through a Bose L1 system for prog and
fusion stuff and he gets excellent tone and response even without a tube
power amp or guitar speaker. So that's possible, too.
I haven't tried the Tonelab myself but I'm impressed with what he gets
out of it.
For my gigs the GNX4 fills multiple roles: I use it as a guitar preamp,
guitar/violin multi-FX box, mic preamp, vocal/instrument mixer, direct
box and live multitracker. It does all that. Kim can probably relate (he
uses one also).
I run my GNX4 direct to the house PA via the balanced XLR output and it
sounds consistently great out front (I can go mono or stereo).
I monitor onstage using the house monitoring system, or through an EV
12" 2 way PA speaker/monitor that I bring, or if I want to travel light,
through a Galaxy powered hot spot on a mic stand at Guitar height (for
easy controlled feedback) - aimed at my ears (lets me keep stage volume
down but I can still make the guitar sing). In all cases, I can keep
stage volume under control and there's no "spotlight" of loud guitar
hitting any part of the audience from the stack I don't use. :^) So the
house engineer really has total control of the mix and the mix is
consistent throughout the FOH.
If there's no house PA (small gigs) I can throw the EV on a pole and
cover the house, or even add its twin and make everyone go deaf with
guitar crunching goodness.
The key for going direct to the PA with the GNX4 and getting great tone
is to turn on the internal speaker emulation, and to program the patches
while listening through a full range system (I use my studio monitors).
Because I also run my violin, my vocals (the GNX4 has a mic preamp), my
guitar synth and sometimes my keyboard through the GNX4, I actually
require full range monitoring rather than just a guitar speaker. However
when I'm just playing guitar at a band gig, I could probably get away
with using a non-full-range guitar speaker. But since the GNX4 sings
just fine without it I haven't felt compelled to haul my 2x12 cab to
gigs. For my particular setup it's just not needed.
However 2x12 sounds great with my heavily modded bassman 50 head! But
that rig no longer has to take the abuse of gigging.
Cheers,
-Jamie

>Sure, a 32 bit float (and also 64 bit float) will have lots of headroom, but
it makes for mixes that clip the 2-buss instead of clipping at the faders.
You can't 'play the console' with this kind of structure like you can with
a mixer that has limited headroom at the faders (like Paris and its integer
based buss). What you see as a limitation, I see as an advantage, and vice
versa...
What you lose with the high headroom 2-buss is variation in clip point...a
high headroom 2-buss will only clip at one spot, where you've set the master
fader to. It's nice to be able to clip a channel using the EQ trim, then
run the fader down a bit, using the trim/clip as a bit of a limiter/level
control. This means that all your tracks clip at different points relating
to their fader settings, which is harder to perceive as clipping per-se since
it sounds more musical in a mix. To do this on a floating pt system you'd
need to add a saturation pluggin.

concentrate on the music and the people, which
will get better end results than managing routing of signals.
I don't mind whether digital or analog, they each have pluses and
minuses, IMHO, though I would probably go for a good digital console as
the price to quality ratio is much higher with a DM2000 than an analog
board, which would necessarily be pretty old at that price and quality
level.

Everything else is pretty well laid out and easy to manage. I don't need the
preamps. What would a DM2000 cost with interconnectivity for3 x RME HDSP
9652's, an RME Multiface, 2 RME ADI8-DS, and 9 x stereo/18 mono Channels of
AES switchable to coax or optical S/Pdif?

you''re running Paris aor Pro Tools HD, then you need a (digtal or analog)
mixer.

;o)HI DJ,
Less than analog console.
The DM2000 VCM has 6 expansion slots with the right combination of
expansion cards you can have up to 96 channels of I/O A48k or 48 chs @
96k. You can mix most any of th exp cards they have so you can replicate
the current I/O needs you have now. If you want to bypass their analog
I/O you can easily hookup your ADI8DS to use with any analog effects or
Mic-Pres if needed.
You can at some point replace all or some of those RME cards with a
single Madi and make the routing allot easier. Yamaha is supposedly
working on their own MY-Madi card but it won't be out for awhile. The
3rd party one is stupid expensive for no reason. Now that we are
building the recording systems for Yamaha Commercial Audio we get to be
dealers. :)

my girlfriend Bonnie is doing an article about retirees who move abroad,
and she was talking to a guy who's retired to Costa Rica. He says he gets
great healthcare for $37/month, and knows people who travel to Costa Rica
to have their operations.
Kinda makes ya proud. By the way, the US, home of the tallest population
in the world, now rates 20th in the world. Tallest kids are now in Holland,
averaging three inches taller than here.
-steveHmmm...
At the risk of being very unpopular, the Dm2000, while an asTOUNDING board,
is discontinued last I heard...and as with all things digital, once discontinued,
lack of any support whatsoever is not far behind...I would think very hard
about the DM2000 (even though I really was amazed at just how good it sounds)
or even a Sony RMX100...
That said, none of my boards are current production models, even the companies
have changed hands drastically or are out of the pro audio biz...but parts
are readily available, and there are no digital issues, software, etc to
be concerned about.
Last FWIW: Otari made a really handy board - had no preamps, just tape returns,
auxes out the wazoo, sources I trust say the EQ was a silent miracle, and
(get this) 48 channels of Eagle automation....
Just an FYI

--------------090404060808000700040205--My Steiny fits perfectly into a Samsonite hardshell suitcase. That's the
reason I bought it. When I use its gig bag, I almost feel like I'm
cheating, it's so tiny.

LOL!
:DI use the gig bag, it looks like a tennis racket. I've never had anyone
even ask me what it was, I just walk on the plane with the Steinberger
over my shoulder, and put it (carefully) on top of whatever is already
in the overhead above me. It also makes a great backup guitar to my PRS
for local gigs. So easy to bring.
I carry the GK amp in a soft bag. It's only about the size of a boombox
and can fit under the seat or in the overhead. But it's heavier than it
looks, so I have a little foldup suitcase dolly to drag it around the
airport.
Cheers,
-Jamie

You know for years I know what sounds good to my ears but the hardest thing
to do is to learn the way to recreate what you hear. Through the last educational
recording materials I purchased I learned that the Acoustic guitar sound
that I love to hear is a six string with nashville tuning. I have also reaffirmed
that my ears love ribbon mics...which I still dont have. I really really
need to find a way to get into a ribbon mic. I really want to get a stereo
ribbon mic like the one from Cascade. I have an extra Mackie HR824 never
been out of he box that I think I am going to have to sell. I have been holding
onto it for years just incase someone stuck their headstock into the speaker
cone.

Yep. A good friend of mine is dying from cancer right now. The
Cyberknife treatments (a series of focused radio beams that intersect
at the tumor) had knocked back the brain tumors and they were going to
start on the lungs...
And then their insurance company told them, "We're done. This is just
stupid, and we're not going to pay any more."
Those treatments run $21k per.
And they can prolong his life so he can see his daughter graduate from
college.
And now, because the insurance company has said, "Yeah, we know you've
been paying in for all these years. Did you REALLY expect us to give
you any of it back????" the treatment center is refusing treatment.
They have the technology to save this man's life, yet they refuse to
use it and will let him die because his insurance company is run by
assholes.
So, the cancer will start growing again, will spread to other parts of
his body, and he'll die. Nice.
Fuckers.

Oh- and I forgot. He's a veteran. Talked to the VA about getting
some help.
Nope.
They have so many kids coming back from Iraq that are all hacked up
and blown to bits, that they're denying benefits to older vets because
they have to spend all their money on the current crop of casualties.
So much for your country taking care of you after serving your
country....
pabThe reason for the new film SICKO.. I really don't under stand those who say
they don;t want a national health care system.
It's not until the current medical/Insurance system reams you and yours then
do you 'see why it's needed'. But knoowwww The Gove will do a even wost job.
That Bull-Shit!! At least, the bill will get paid.. Ok, I can hear someone
saying by who??
By our hard earned tax dollars that are being wasted on stupid programs and
politicians. Let's take care of our own.!!
Unlike many in this country, I have paid into our tax system for over 30
years, and I for one would be glad to pay for me and my family, you and your
families health needs.

I took a look at their site and they do show the DM series as
discontinued. Are the new ones basically the same, but with a s/w update?
I also saw some new smaller digital mixers that look kinda cool, w/ more
dedicated knobs than most small format digital mixers have. Know
anything about those?

I would rather pay for Lamont's family's (or yours) healthcare
needs than pay for someone who HASN'T been paying into the
system, yet we have to do that anyway, don't we?
This is one area where I stray from my mostly-conservative
leanings... I think we should try & find a way to provide
healthcare for everyone - the biggest part of the problem
becomes this: when the govt steps in & determines what's
a "fair" price for something & hence starts regulating prices,
quality falls by the wayside. People going into college are
going to forget about med school because you won't be able to
make $250k as a doctor anymore & decide where you're going to
live & work - the government pays you $75k and assigns you to a
city somewhere. Why amass mountains of debt in student loans to
do that? Nursing is a pretty decent field to be in, in a lot
of cities RN's & LVN's can get a signing bonus, just like in
the NFL (ok, not that big lol), and can often choose their own
hours/shifts within reason because there's such a demand for
their skills. Under a government healthcare system, their pay &
assignments would be determined by the govt, as well. Probably
this would go all the way down to positions like x-ray & lab
technicians, orderlies, janitors... candy-stripers
would become part of Americorps, I'm sure. :)
To summarize it, the entire healthcare system experience would
be like walking into one big, giant Department of Motor
Vehicles office... except it's not your car registration you're
needing, it's a triple-bypass.
How does THAT idea sit with you?
So, the question really becomes: Do you REALLY want people like
doctors & nurses as civil servants?

Yes AFAIK the only major update is the DSP increase and the quality and
number of effects. I think also the mixers software has more routing
options but haven't A/Bed it with an old one yet.
Which of the smaller ones? The 01v96v2 and o2r96v2 or the DM1000v2? I
think the o1v96 is the only one currently that has a chance to be
discontinued. But normally they just replace and upgrade. That ones
feature set is getting long in th e tooth.

The reason that these doctors are not taking Medicare patients is because
the government runs it in such a wonderful way.Well heck, if it's discontinued, it's right up my alley. It can replace my
discontinued Steinberg Houston.and interface with my *soon to be*
discontinued RME HDSP 9652's.
I'm starting to feel right at home again. I picked up a Demeter VTCL the
other day. Went to their site to DL a manual and guess what???........yep,
it's now *vintage*. It will feel right at home here in the *Studio Of The
Living Dead*.
