this is the first time I've visited the Logic forum. I've had it in the back
of my mind to move to a 8 core MAC running Logic........I think it may just
stay in the back of my mind.....along with all of the other things there
like ....well......you already know most of it and you don't want to know
the rest.

re-fit, or are having new faceplates painted and engraved. Been working
on it for a year so far... :-p

Quicktime update and the NeoOffice update, I had some strange behavior
including a rare crash of Final Cut and display problems in Logic (both
reported to Apple). After a reboot things seem to have settled down,
Logic is behaving, FCP is editing, and I'm working again. I also
installed today's Mainstage update.
BTW, I haven't upgraded to OSX 10.5 yet.
Anyway, Deej, fuggetabout it. You're not buying a Mac and neither is
Dedric. Just ain't gonna happen, and that's OK.

constant notices from Apple about security updates,
Quicktime and iTunes updates. ;-)
I recently installed the Nuendo 4 update, a handful of new VSTi's, a new
library, and it all just works.

LOL. Well, I'll have to get one for my wife. Today it started up with a
kernel crash... couldn't even wait until we tried to type and email or
search for a file. I don't think we'll be able to limp along with this one
much longer - this has to be the longest slowest death of a computer I've
ever seen.
I'm thinking an iMac would be great for her (24" models look really nice),
but we've also contemplated a MacBook with separate display, but a tower is
still an option. I've thought about getting a MacBook pro myself to replace
my laptop (which is only used for email, net, OpenOffice, etc) - also to
have a Mac in house, but too many other expenses taking precendence for the
next few months.
Sorry to hear Apple is falling down on Logic's stability recently. I know
it's frustrating. Maybe someone needs to kick Steve in the butt and tell
him he's starting to act like Macrosoft.

You mean Apple has started fixing the problems in MSWindows? How
generous of them. ;^)
Apple isn't perfect but I wouldn't fault them for periodic security
updates, that's a huge plus IMO.

Even Logic 8, except for yesterday's incident which appeared to be a
temporary systemic problem. Not sure what caused it, one of the updates
leaving things in an odd state; a power surge; a bug in Logic, OSX or
one of the other apps; or what? But rebooting (which BTW I rarely need
to do, this machine has great uptime) seems to have fixed it so far.

My G4 Power Book has a broken hinge (which I consider to be due to a
design fault, they have a beefier mono-hinge in newer Mac laptops).
Anyway, it's still kickin' otherwise, but I hope to replace it next
month, if a 17" HD version is announced that has LED backlighting or if
the rumored new flash-based ultra light laptop seems compelling.
My G5 has been a dependable cruiser.

MacBook Pro is overkill for that. Heck, a MacBook is overkill for that.
Unless she intends to run MSWindows on it. ;^)
Whatever you do, wait until after the Macworld Expo keynote on January
15th. It's possible new laptops and towers will be announced.

Maybe so. But AFAIK they still have some of the same development crew
for Logic from the old eMagic.
IMO Logic 8 is a big step up from Logic 7 in terms of work flow without
killing the power behind Logic. They obviously put some thought into it.
The newly included Mainstage is pretty cool, too, as is Waveburner. (The
bundling of Soundtrack Pro didn't add anything for me since it's also
included with Final Cut.)
There have been two Logic/Waveburner/Mainstage releases in the last four
months. Hopefully they will continue the development pace and increase
the stability for anyone having problems. From the Logic team's past
development performance, that's a reasonable expectation. Especially
since any wobbliness is entirely on Apple, they make the computer, the
OS and the app. Not much finger pointing can be done to excuse any
problems. :^)
This last Logic release included a couple of specific features users
have been requesting, so it's encouraging that the developers seem to be
listening to the users.
Oh hey, speaking of updates, I just got a notice that Battery 3 was
updated. Gotta go try that...

The big differences between Logic 7 and 8 are UI/workflow refinements.
Logic 7 is still a powerful program so if the L8 update doesn't work for
you, you can report whatever problems you run into and keep using Logic
7 for the time being.

Not really - they just keep updating it so PC users don't know it's really
being crippled as
a marketing move. ;-) QT works okay, but it still can't run with
professional audio cards on
the PC side without stuttering audio - video is fine though (Nuendo now
supports H.264 which looks
great in Nuendo and really low cpu usage, which is nice).

What? Bugs in Nuendo/Cubase? Nah. Never. ;-) Actually N4 is running
great - the only problem I found
was loading older templates based on past version preferences. The new
routing, preferences fully xml compliant now, etc -
using an old template would cause weird issues. Once I rebuilt my templates
from a blank project in N4, it's working beautifully.
As far as the Cubase crowd (except those here) - never believe anything you
read from the Cubase forum,
or users there. Most of the bugs there lie between the chair and the mouse.

I was just giving you a hard time. That happens regardless of platform.
The problem isn't
Apple or Microsoft, it's that humans design this stuff, and well, it just
isn't always perfect.

Absolutely. It could be any day, but we're hoping to hold out a little
longer. Shame I can't buy a motherboard
on Newegg and fix it for $50 - $700 from a Mac shop just isn't worth it
compared to getting a much faster machine.

I've heard about that from a director I work with - he's chomping at the bit
to get one, assuming it could
be used for field video work.

Actually I'm the one only running email/net/ftp on my laptop - if I got a
MacBook Pro it would pull
double duty as a farm/fx system since with 2G and a true core2 duo it would
fly for that, and give me
some variety. It's low on the list though since I don't really need it.
My wife does graphic design/illustration, so the only real need for a faster
system and more RAM for her would
be just to have a faster system, and if she gets into using raw photos and
of course for larger design projects.

Downloading it now.... I would take you up on Massive, but since I have it
in Komplete 5, I don't have a need for a standalone copy at the moment, and
only use Massive from time to time (seriously killer synth though).

7 works well enough for what's being done. i have 2 other friends
using logic and depending on the rig each has it's own logic quirks
(bugs).
since i don't really do this for a living like i once did it's not
that critical anymore

Now that Native Instruments has updated a few more plugins for leapard
(as of yesterday), I just have to double check the update status of a
few other apps and then order leapard, although I'll probably finish a
few in-progress projects before actually installing it. If leapard sucks
here I'll let you know.
