edge and the new Intel chips have a _lot_ more 'headroom' than anything they've
had out in a long, long time. I wondered why Apple went with Intel instead
of AMD even if they were going to get in the x86 game. I think it's pretty
clearly this generation of chips and the generations to come based on this
microarchitecture. I've been a mostly AMD guy for a while now but that might
change in the next year or so. Just keep your eye open for honest information,
it might get a bit suprising soon.

One of you suggested changing out my video card. I currently
have an NVIDIA RIVA TNT2. Any suggestions?
I just want it to play nice with Paris, and solve my CPU load
problem. I may have some video soundtrack work in the future,
so that is a consideration, but not crucial.
Thanks so much!
ChrisI never met or spoke with SSC, but:
I just submitted some tracks to a very talented mix engineer,
so he could mix my latest project, and save me a bunch of time,
and I could get out on the old mountain bike for once.
He spent 10 hours mixing a song on his PT HD rig. He e-mailed
me to let me know that he would pass on the mixing. He could
not get the PT mix to sound as good as the rough mix that I
dithered down to an .mp3 and e-mailed him as a reference.
At higher levels, the PT mix would get "harsh", in his words,
while the Paris mix was "buttery". This guy had no previous
experience with Paris, and is passing up income to give this
project back to me.
I really wanted to go mountain biking, but I am amazed at the
continued relevance of Paris, here in 2006. That's a pretty
cool legacy of SSC.
Chriswww.txmicro.com is a good place to watch, I've recently found. They carry
older cards, IE ones that are more of the Paris era motherboards. I just
ordered my second video card from them in 2 weeks trying to up my video RAM,
once I get time to stuff 'em in there, I'll post.
Riva is usually a pretty friendly chip though, so I'm not sure why you'd
have troubles with it. What chipset on the mobo you have?
On the other hand, I think I gave like $33 total for this latest vidcard
order.. it's a cheap 'try it dude' fix.
(4F-4214)64MB nVidia GeForce3 Ti 200 8x AGP 1 27.00
when I'm done, I am looking at 4x the video RAM that I have now. Total cost
is some time and about $60-$70. That doesn't suck.

the video card?
I had to return a nVidia card because it didn't play nice
with Paris. I would never recommend them for Paris users
although some have had great success with them.=20
=20
Any other audio cards in the computer? That can be
a problem with EDS cards too. If the video card swap doesn't help=20
your problem I'd look at Windows tweaks. Maybe start with the=20
graphics stuff.
Make sure no IRQs are sharing (you probably have done this)
and disable all unused USB/printer ports, onboard sound
anything peripheral that's unneeded. No clock on desktop,
no automatic updates blah, blah, blah. =20
Good luck!

------=_NextPart_000_001E_01C6730C.DDD78A50--Hey Chris,
(Sorry to detour this thread momentarily with a personal reply to the
group). If you still want to get on the mountain bike and out of the studio,
email me offline. I have an alternative that would be a much more
interesting comparison, esp. given the levels discussion - even if only for
one track. I'm in Co. Springs now - you're in or near Denver aren't you?

I love my Precision 8s. Transparent, plenty of noiseless gain
even for ribbons. Almost too much gain for drums.
Might want/need a comp in line to lower it's output into Paris
if you want to push the levels up at the pre.
Built well although I have one channel who's phantom
is fried. It may have been on while patching (big no no).
I heard this might be a flaw in the design. It's a drag
that the line ins are in the same jack as the mic input.
I have to crawl in back to swap them out from time to time.
They sound great though. I bought two and use them all the
time. Big smile on everyone's face even when compared to Neve's.
More clarity, less edge/iron.

Yeah, I've had my eye on the "True" box for a while, for a go-anywhere
laptop rig I'm thinking about putting together. If you look on their
site and see who's using their stuff -- kind of convincing...
Maybe they'd send you one for a test-drive...
Keep us posted -- Chas.

------=_NextPart_000_004B_01C6736E.39472B00--Jamie, thanks for the info. I currently use Logic 4.7, so I am familiar with
the app and want to stay with logic for a host of resaons. I'm not sure how
much "film music" I'll be doing ,but wanted to be sure I have the upward
mobility to run software like "FinalCut Pro". We are working on our first
ducumentary, and simple video locking to two track mixes within Logic seems
like it will suffice.
RAM wise, I figured I'd start with 1 gig and go further if necessary.
Thanks again...much appreciated!

Its always cool shit to go to high school with someone that makes it
bigtime.
My buddy Seth Meyers is a cast member and head writer on Saturday Night
Live....
Dunno if you've ever heard of him but its a trip to see him doing comedy
every Saturday.
He even gets to rep Boston and yell in Derek Jeters face saying "Yankees
Suck!"Yep tried it. No luck. I'm going to be *re-optimizing* my system tonight.

I'm going to go back to square one and start with each individual band's set

render each track as a new track and dump the old paf's

I have conversing with Dean a lot over the last year
as he has become a steel player this year (man, does
he adapt quick--he was playing it on several tunes on
the Crosby/Nash European tour last year after only a
few month on the instrument). I got to spend a good
deal of time with him in March at the Dallas Steel Guitar
show, and he was a joy to hang with--very humble and warm
with a lot of great stories. He is posting fairly often
on the steel forum (www.steelguitarforum.com). I'll let him
know you're around over here.... :)
Wow, his allmusic.com credit list is absolutely astounding...
